It was all over the news last week when 5fm's Gareth Cliff got arrested near Pretoria for exceeding a speed limit on the R21 near Lyttleton in Centurion. He was apparently driving at 182 kilometres/h in a 120 km/h zone.

He was arrested on the 6th of March and had to send the whole night in a prison cell in Pretoria. He was later released on bail and his case was postponed to yesterday, due to the fact that there were inquiries regarding his case, whether his licence would should be suspended as well.

He pleaded guilty to the charges of violating The Road Traffic Act93 of 1996, section 59 which clearly states that

 "(4) No person shall drive a vehicle on a public road at a speed in excess of-
(a) the general speed limit which in terms of subsection (1) applies in respect of that road;
(b) the speed limit indicated in terms of subsection (2) by an appropriate road traffic sign in respect of that road"

Gareth Cliff was given the sentance of the R10 000 fine or six months in prison. It was amazing how the power of social media can infleunce how people feel about a person, Gareth's news was all over twitter the moment he got arrested and people were sympathisingwith him.
This has to be one lesson learned from Gareth Cliff, now he will never again exceed a speed limit.
